Where to Stay in Hiriketiya: Areas, Tips & Our Guest House
Planning a trip to Hiriketiya (Hirikatiya)? Compare the best areas to stay, what to look for in accommodation, and why a quiet guest house near the beach works best.
Hiriketiya, often spelled Hirikatiya, is a small horseshoe bay on Sri Lanka’s south coast near Dikwella. It’s much smaller than Mirissa or Unawatuna, so where you stay makes a big difference to your trip: how far you walk to the waves, how quiet your nights are, and how much you spend.
Here’s our honest local guide to choosing accommodation in Hiriketiya.
The main areas to stay
Right on the bay
The handful of places directly on the beach put you seconds from the surf. The trade-off is that they’re usually the most expensive, book up first in peak season, and can be noisy in the evenings when the beach bars and cafés are busy.
Best for: short stays, travellers who want to roll out of bed and onto a surfboard.
The lanes just behind the beach (a few minutes’ walk)
This is where most guest houses and small villas are. You’re close enough to walk to the sand, the cafés and the surf schools in a few minutes, but far enough back to sleep well. Prices are generally better value than beachfront, and you often get more space and a garden.
Best for: most visitors, especially stays of four nights or more, couples, and remote workers.
Dikwella town
Dikwella is a couple of kilometres away. Accommodation here is often cheaper, and you’re close to shops, the bus stop and the Wewurukannala temple. You’ll need a tuk-tuk to reach Hiriketiya beach each day.
Best for: budget travellers and people who don’t mind a short ride.
Nearby beaches
Some visitors stay in Talalla, Nilwella or Tangalle and visit Hiriketiya for the day. It’s a good option if you want a quieter, wider beach, but you’ll miss the relaxed evening atmosphere around the bay.
What to look for when booking
- Walking distance to the beach. Check the real distance. “Near Hiriketiya” sometimes means a 10-minute tuk-tuk ride.
- A quiet location. If sleep matters, choose a place a little back from the bay rather than directly beside the bars.
- Mosquito nets or screens. This is a tropical coast, and a good net makes a big difference.
- Breakfast. Having breakfast at your accommodation saves time and money before an early surf.
- Space to relax. A garden or veranda is very welcome in the hot early afternoon, when most people take a break from the sun.
- Book direct. Booking directly with a guest house usually gets you a better price than a booking website, plus a direct line to the owners for surf lessons, transfers and tips.
When to book
The busiest months are December to March, especially around Christmas, New Year and February. The best places fill up weeks or even months ahead, so book early if your dates are fixed. From May to October, the south coast is quieter and you’ll have more choice. See our guide to the best time to visit Hiriketiya.
