How to Get to Hiriketiya from Colombo & the Airport (Car, Train, Bus)
All the ways to get to Hiriketiya from Colombo airport (CMB), Colombo city and Galle: private transfer, the coastal train and buses, with travel times and tips.
Hiriketiya sits on Sri Lanka’s south coast, just outside the town of Dikwella in the Matara District. It’s easy to reach from the airport and from Colombo, and the drive has improved a lot since the Southern Expressway opened. These are your options, from the most comfortable to the cheapest.
Option 1: Private transfer (recommended)
Time: about 3.5 to 4 hours from Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), or about 3 hours from Colombo city.
This is the easiest option, especially after a long flight. Your driver meets you in arrivals and drives you along the expressways almost all the way to the south coast. You’ll arrive at the guest house door without any bus changes or luggage stress.

Option 2: The coastal train
Time: about 3.5 to 5 hours from Colombo Fort to Matara, then about 40 minutes by tuk-tuk or taxi.
The coastal railway is one of the most scenic train rides in Sri Lanka. For long stretches the track runs right beside the ocean. Trains run from Colombo Fort to Matara, and from there it’s a short tuk-tuk or taxi ride east to Dikwella and Hiriketiya.
Tips:
- Sit on the right-hand side heading south for the sea views.
- Reserved seats (where available) are worth it in peak season.
- Check the current timetable at the station or on the Sri Lanka Railways website, as schedules change.
Option 3: Bus
Time: about 3.5 to 5 hours from Colombo, depending on the route.
Buses are the cheapest option:
- Expressway buses run from the Makumbura (Kottawa) multimodal centre in Colombo toward Matara and Tangalle. They’re faster and air-conditioned.
- Regular Galle Road buses heading toward Tangalle or Kataragama pass through Dikwella. They’re slow but very cheap.
From Dikwella town, a tuk-tuk to Hiriketiya takes only a few minutes.
