Best Time to Visit Hiriketiya: Month-by-Month Weather & Surf Guide

Hiriketiya is warm all year round, with daytime temperatures usually around 27–31 °C. What changes through the year is the rain, the sea and the crowds, all driven by Sri Lanka’s two monsoons. Here’s how the seasons work on the south coast, and when we’d recommend visiting.

• Best weather and calmest sea: December to March
• Best value and fewest crowds: May to October, if you don’t mind some showers and bigger waves
• Busiest time: late December to February. Book your room early.

Visiting December to March

This is Hiriketiya at its classic best: dry days, gentle offshore mornings and a lively but relaxed atmosphere around the bay. It’s the ideal time for learning to surf, swimming, and whale watching from Mirissa, which runs roughly November to April.

Tip: Rooms close to the beach sell out early for this period, so book your dates as soon as you know them.

Visiting May to October

The southwest monsoon brings rain to the south coast, but it rarely rains all day. Typically there are showers, then sunshine. The upsides are fewer people, lower prices and a greener, quieter coast. The sheltered bay can still have surfable days, and the Hummanaya blowhole near Kudawella is at its most dramatic when the sea is rough.

If you visit in this season, pack a light rain jacket, keep swimming to calm days, and always check conditions locally.

Festivals worth knowing about

• Sinhala & Tamil New Year (mid-April): a national holiday with family celebrations and traditional games. Some local shops close for a few days.
• Vesak (full moon in May): lanterns and decorations light up towns and temples across Sri Lanka.
• Poya days (every full moon): public holidays. Alcohol isn’t sold in shops or most restaurants.

Our recommendation

For a first visit, come between January and March for the most reliable weather and the best learner surf. If you want a quieter, better-value trip and don’t mind some rain, June to September can be lovely.
